Useful 404’s

Inspired by Dean Frickey’s A List Apart Article, A More Useful 404, I’ve whipped up the Useful 404’s WordPress Plugin.  This plugin will allow you to set a message and email notification for the 4 main types of 404 errors:

  1. mistyped URLS/old bookmarks
  2. internal broken urls
  3. external website broken urls
  4. search engine broken urls

The plugin is fully configurable. You can add your own search engine sites, and set the 404 notice text for your site based on these 4 conditions.  The emails will let you know where a broken url is coming from so you can fix it, and let your users know why the URL was broken and if it was there mistake, they can fix it or find what they were looking for!
